About The Right to Speak

The Right to Speak is the brainchild of Dr. Joshua Wright. It is an advocacy group with the purpose of bringing awareness and support for speech impediments in children in Jamaica. Dr. Wright himself was diagnosed with a speech impediment at age 3 and spent 8 years in speech therapy with Mrs. Andrea Wray . He has teamed up with her to drive this initiative forward.

Mission Statement

The Right to Speak (RTS) is an advocacy group aiming to bring awareness and acceptance of speech impediments in Jamaican children and help cultivate an environment for them to achieve their full potential.

Why?

The goal of RTS is to educate and enlighten families, schools and the public on the causes, challenges, treatment and resources available to  children in order to change the attitude and perceptions around speech impediments. The ultimate intent is to bring awareness which will help to ensure that these children are not marginalized or stigmatized and receive early intervention and support to realize their full potential and most of all, to be heard.

How?

The Right to Speak aims to circulate relevant information on speech impediments to the public. We aim to do this through print, broadcast and social media, as well as seminars, presentations to schools, health care events and other community events.
